Work Experience
Fosdick & Hilmer
Controls Engineer Co-op
Summer 2016
This semester my primary focus outside of AutoCAD design was developing for the new micro PLC platform we wanted to implement. I began development of the hardware assembly the first week I returned. Once the customer defined the requirements of the system, coding the needed functionality took less than a week for the first prototype, and total development including the fabrication and HMI programming took less than two months. This experience was extremely exciting to me as I got to see a project from inception to delivery, and I was in control of most of the development.
Spring 2016
I worked with senior controls engineers to construct instrumentation and control system designs using AutoCAD 2015. During the first part of the semester, I designed and fabricated one of the first micro programmable logic controller assemblies that our company implemented. I became very familiar with Allen Bradley and GE PLC hardware platforms, and I learned Structured Text and Ladder Logic in order to be able to program the controllers. This knowledge helped to develop the next major project I took on. I was given legacy hardware with a program written in MegaBasic, and I converted it to Structured Text code to support our new platform. This semester was instrumental in developing professionally as it was my first time working with senior engineers, and technically as I learned valuable skills like AutoCAD and Structured Text.
